These two photographs demonstrate the benefits to the patient of surgery with the Harmonic Scalpel. Each of these two women had facelift surgery. The woman on the left was operated on with a traditional scalpel. The woman on the right was operated on with the Harmonic. While not all patients will experience the extraordinary degree of immediate healing that this Harmonic patient did, an independent study of facelift patients found that, on average, the patient returned to a normal social life within eight days. Depending on the procedure, HARMONIC may lead to less postoperative pain, drainage, bruising and swelling than plastic surgery procedures without HARMONIC.

What Our Minimally Invasive Techniques and the Harmonic Scalpel Mean to You

Go back to work days after a facelift? Yes—thanks to the remarkable Harmonic Scalpel. The Harmonic is the safe new technology in Plastic Surgery and the L.A. Vinas Center is the only Plastic Surgery Center in Palm Beach County fully accredited in the use of this medical breakthrough. Using modern ultrasound vibration rather than traditional scalpel technology, the Harmonic allows easier surgery, which in turn leads to a significant decrease in the recovery period. Dr. Vinas is a pioneer in minimally invasive surgical techniques, often using the Harmonic Scalpel and typically with no general anesthesia. This allows the L.A. Vinas Center to provide you with remarkable results using the most modern approach available today.

“Typically after a facelift, a patient needs up to a full month to recover before going out in public,” said renowned Boca Raton plastic surgeon Luis A. Viñas, M.D., F.A.C.S., board certified in plastic surgery, and one of the first surgeons in America to use the Harmonic. “The trauma caused by traditional surgical methods takes a long time to heal. But with Harmonic, patients experience less bruising and swelling, and therefore less down time or recovery time. It really is remarkable. And the results are excellent.”

The Harmonic® product line has been used worldwide for over a decade in more than nine million surgical procedures, in a variety of specialties.  Harmonic® technology provides many surgical benefits, including minimal lateral thermal spread of heat to healthy tissue, no electricity passes through the body, and no current induced muscular stimulation/movement. With traditional scalpels, the scalpel “cuts” with either mechanical force or with electro cartery burning. This can cause extensive trauma to the area that is operated on. But the Harmonic scalpel is based on ultra sound waves—vibrations that are moving at an incredible 55,000 vibrations per second.

Dr. Viñas, who was hired onto the Faculty of Ethicon Endo-Surgery to teach Plastic Surgeons across America in the use of the new technology, explains what this means to his patients:

“With traditional scalpel technology, the muscles in the body are constantly contracting erratically during surgery due to the pressures they are subjected to. The tissue also gets hotter. This causes more trauma, swelling, bleeding, bruising, and sometimes the need for multiple dissections, a longer surgery time, and a protracted recovery period.”

“With the incredibly clean cutting power of the Harmonic, all this has been redefined.  In my practice combining the Harmonic® with our minimally invasive techniques, simply put: Less trauma and less healing time.”

Dr. Viñas, a noted Plastic Surgeon in Palm Beach since 1995, has performed over 300 surgeries with the Harmonic over the past two years, including 60 facelifts and 85 tummy tucks.

“I have had abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) patients, using my minimally invasive techniques, walk the day after surgery. In my 23 years of surgery I had never seen that. Usually it takes three or four days.”

“I have had facelift patients going back to work in eight to ten days. Usually it would take three to four weeks.”

“I have used the Harmonic to perform breast reduction, breast lift and breast augmentation in Palm Beach. I also use it for more specific facial procedures, such as brow lift. All with excellent results.”

The Harmonic scalpel technology cost to the patient is only $200 more than a traditional surgical operation, and that money covers the cost of the actual scalpel itself which is disposed of after each surgery.

One key to Harmonic’s success with plastic surgery patients is the experience of the surgeon using the Harmonic. A surgeon needs to be well schooled in the use of this new technology, and Ethicon provides extensive training, including lectures and demonstrations by Dr. Viñas, to surgeons who now wish to use the Harmonic.

“I lecture and teach training classes to doctors across America on the use of the Harmonic,” said Dr. Viñas. “Once a surgeon masters it, I don’t think he would want to use any other scalpel.”

One of Dr. Viñas’ face lift West Palm Beach patients who had Dr. Vinas’s minimally invasive  procedure done with the Harmonic® said: “I went back to work seven days after the surgery. I wouldn’t have been able to take a month off work for a facelift. Everything that I had read about the Harmonic was true—and my results were fantastic.”
